Big Sing: The Music Department has had a number of notable achievements over the last week. At the Big Sing Choir Regional (Auckland area) Competition, two Westlake Choirs, Choralation and Cantare, came away with Distinction Awards. Only 7 Choirs of the 72 entered received one of these awards. Our Senior choir Cigno Voce gained a Highly Commended Award and our junior Choir Nota Bella gained a Commended Award. Choralation were also winners of the Best Programme of a Mixed Choir and Cantare were runners up in the Best Performance using Māori text category.
Big Sing also run a Composition Competition and Xiaole Zhan (Year 12) placed Second in this and Amy Lambert (Year 13) placed Third.
New Zealand Chamber Music Competition: Westlake Girls has two viola players that are in groups which have been chosen for last round (semi-finals) of this competition. Cecile McNeill’s (Year 13) trio and Rachel An’s (Year 10) octet will now go to Christchurch in August along with the other members of their respective groups to vie for a place in the Finals.
