Westlake Girls is the current three-time New Zealand Secondary Schools Basketball Champion and bronze medallist at the 2024 World Schools Basketball Championship. The outstanding team, led by Head Coach Bronwen Davidson and Assistant Coach Nela Fotu, has developed an admirable programme of athleticism, professionalism, and team culture, which attracts basketballers from around the North Shore. The competitive pathway begins in Year 9 with all Juniors aspiring to secure a place in the Junior A team and compete in the Zone 1 Junior Premiership Tournament in September. Next, students aim for a spot in the Open A team and then the Premier Team.

For those interested in a more social pace, the North Harbour Under 17 and Under 19 grades offer students the chance to relax with friends and train when they choose. All junior triallists are graded in Years 9 and 10.

COMPETITIONS:

Harbour Basketball – Junior Competition for Year 9 and 10’s: 4pm – 6pm on a Wednesday or Thursday in Term 2 and Term 3 (starts 7 May)
Under 17 and Under 19: 4pm – 8pm Thursday or Friday night (starts 8-9 May)
Open Grade: 5pm – 8pm on Thursday nights (starts 8 May)
Premier team plays in the Auckland League from 6pm – 8pm on Friday nights in a home and away format (starts 2 May)

TRIALS:

Juniors and Seniors Trial 1- Saturday 15 February – Juniors: 9.30am – 12pm and Seniors 12.30pm – 3pm
Seniors Trial 2 + Junior Invitees -Saturday, 22 February from 9am – 3pm with a strong focus on the Junior Teams and the Senior 3-on-3 teams.
Junior Trial 2 – Wednesday 26 February – 7am – 9am at WGHS
Trials will take place at Westlake Boys High School.

2025 3×3 BASKETBALL:

Westlake Girls enters four teams in the Basketball NZ 3 x 3 tournaments, and these teams are selected from the basketball trials in February. The Senior competition is the regional qualifying event for the 3 x 3 National Secondary Schools Championship in April, and the Junior 3×3 regional tournament is a standalone event in November.

STUDENT COACHES:

Senior students are also encouraged to experience the joy of coaching a junior team; however, we also welcome enthusiastic parents who are interested in coaching or managing their daughter’s team. The regular season for all teams begins in early May, culminating in early August for the local competition and then in early October for the Premier team.

2025 JUNIOR 3 on 3 BASKETBALL

The regional Junior 3 on 3 Basketball Tournaments are one-off events played in late November and attract Westlake Girls’ top Junior players each year. The school is looking for players to fill two entries – the Junior Elite and Junior Open teams. Trials are typically held at the start of Term 4, and teams train weekly in preparation for the event.
